Timex SL Series Flyback Chrono

Sports chronographs are usually best paired with casual attire; slim, minimal watches with evening wear. Timex's ninja-black SL Series Fly-Back Chrono is one of the few timepieces that works with with both t-shirt and jeans or sleek velvet tux. It performs a need trick, too. Usually when one resets a watch, one loses several seconds in the process because the seconds hand stops. This watch contains a microprocessor that tracks how long the seconds hand stopped for - then moves it back into the same position when you snap the crown back down.

Rolex Sky-Dweller

Putting aside the rather meretricious marketing puff, in which tennis superstar Roger Federer describes this watch as as 'very nice', the Rolex Sky-Dweller is a magnificent piece of mechanical engineering. It allows one to keep track of the time across multiple time zones; an inner ring keeps track of the time at home while traditional hour, minute, and second hands denote local time. To set the watch, the Ring Command bezel can be turned to one of three positions: local time, date and a second timezone. In addition, the Sky-Dweller uses an astronomical cycle called Saros so that it knows the difference between 30 and 31 day months. In other words, it's like Roger said: 'very nice'.

Linde Werdelin Oktopus II

Behold, the latest novelty from high-end watch brand Linde Werdelin. And by 'novelty', we mean the horological kind (a one-off or limited edition showpiece, rather than a gun that shoots out a 'BANG!' flag). Engineered to withstand depths of 300m, the Oktopus II diving watch protects its beating heart from saltwater corrosion with a ceramic and titanium case that is clamped together with no less than 16 screws.

Colette x March Labs 1805 Imperial Phantom pocket watch

The pocket watch may have been superceeded by the wristwatch over 200 years ago, but it's making an unlikely comeback. Last year a number of high-profile brands launched modern - and in some cases outlandish - interpretations of the pocket watch, but this is by far our favourite. A collaboration between L.A. horologists March Labs and French object d'art store Colette, it's an 1805-style Napoleonic watch on a snakecoil chain - coated in a 'Lord Vader' black PVD finish. Next week: a monocle with a built-in heads-up display...
